The 10 megapixel, bulky, point & shoot camera is a reasonably good performer with good image quality compared to other point-&-shoot camera. With features like 720p HD recording, Hybrid IS technology, optical view-finder & multi aspect shooting the PowerShot G12 Canon is a good bet for a starter at digital photography.

G12 Canon Review

Despite being an average model in its category G12 Canon has some commendable features which make it a worthwhile purchase. The camera has a bulky tank like appearance. The front & rear of the camera has dials for regulating the aperture & shutter speed along with 2 dials on top for regulating the exposure compensation & ISO. This gives it a DSLR feel which is good & provides for good manual control.

G12 Canon has the ability to record 720p HD movies in stereo sound. The 5x optical & 4x digital zoom offer a good close up range but are disabled during video recording mode. The lens in the camera is mediocre with a 35mm wide lens with an aperture size of f/2.8 – f/4.5 which is not up-to the mark considering other competing models in the market. Though the image quality is maintained thanks to the Hybrid IS system along with the HS system present in the camera provide blur-free high resolution images with less noise & better clarity.

The articulating LCD screen is a good feature especially for taking shots at awkward angles. The screen can be flipped open & rotated 180` forward & 90` backwards. The screen measures 28” & helps user to view the scene while shooting above the crowd’s head or at positions below the waist. The G12 Canon contains an optical view-finder which is not very over the top as compared to other cameras in this category.  The camera is equipped with an HDMI port along with USB 2.0 &A.V. ports. The HDMI port allows easy connection to a HDTV. The battery life is average & a spare battery is recommended for those who take long trips.

I have only had the Canon Powershot G12 for a few weeks. From what I can tell, the camera takes great shots and offers a number of both useful and fun “scene” effects. Quality is good, but noticed as soon as I started using it that I don’t like the cover on the LCD screen. It is awkward how it opens and protrudes out, as if it doesn’t belong. It interferes with quick shots, because it takes an extra second or two to simply open the LCD screen cover. I bought it in haste, since my Powershot G9 had died, and I was leaving for Barbados in a couple of days. Since I absolutely loved my G9, I assumed (without fully researching G12) that it would be even better. I need more time to play with its features and learn how to use it without the LCD screen. That is the only negative I have observed. Otherwise a nice camera. – By Julie

Been a camera bug since 6th grade (1946) Had them all. Speed Graphic, Leica M3, Rollieflex, Canon SLR. Finally bought a Canon Powershot in 2008. Loved how easy it was to make great prints on my computer. No more sodium theosulfate, and chrome alum. D76, D72 etc etc. haha No doubt I spelled that wrong.
I used to take one second hand held shots with my M3 with good results. I was really into existing light photography there for awhile. My powershot A720 didn’t do to well in low light situations. I read about how good the Canon G12 was for low light shots. IT IS! In fact, when set on AUTO, the flash hardly ever goes off. It simply adjust itself for a high ISO and takes the picture. WOW! No brains required. Love the camera, and yes, I also like the feel of it. Someone had put down the rough finish etc etc. But I really like it.
I could have bought a bigger, heavier digital SLR, but it wouldn’t fit in my jacket pocket like the G12 does. Ya, it’s bigger then the old Powershot, but it will fit.
Gave the Powershot to my daughter in Colville, Washington. Hoping she’ll send family pictures back to us here in Massachusetts once in awhile. – By R. C. Randall

This camera is a one stop shop for pros or amateurs. I bought this camera in april this year and took it with me on several vacations capturing images that bring out a wow from experienced and enthusiasts anytime. If you want a camera with all the advantages of an SLR without the hassels of carrying extra equipment with you, look no more.
